Being Happy In The Workplace

We often here about the work/life balance and how important it is.  For some it seems impossible, or at least extremely unrealistic, what is the fate for these unfortunate individuals?  Is there anything they can do?

The reality is simply this, not everyone has the luxury of doing something that they love, and in fact the vast majority of individuals do jobs that they do not necessarily like.   The good news is that there are several things that can be done and that different levels of a work/life balance are achievable by all.

It is important to remember that this life is what you allow it to be and many things have to do with perspective, before you actually try to physically change anything try to change the way that you see it.  When you feel that you must change the environment start small, if there are people in the workplace that bother you attempt to minimize your interactions with them.  If you are not satisfied with the actual work or tasks that you are completing on a daily basis talk to your supervisor about changing or adding responsibilities or objectives that you feel would be more fulfilling.

Acceptance is another part of finding peace and happiness in our work.   Some things are difficult and sometimes impossible to change and it is these things that we must accept.  The reality is we toil for the things that we enjoy in life and without that struggle there is no reward, so ultimately we work to be happy.  Very few of us are born with the luxury of not having to work.  Accepting things that we currently have a difficult time dealing with again goes back to perspective.  That annoying co-worker that always seems to have an attitude may have some serious issues at home.  Instead of thinking what’s her problem, really think about what her problem may be, maybe if the opportunity presents itself ask her.  Understanding the perspective of another often has an interested way of helping you deal with why this individual may be causing problem in the first place.

Finally if you cannot change it or accept it then it is time to leave it.  They are other opportunities out there.  Some may say that this too is impossible that they have mortgages or children and they can’t afford to go long at all without a paycheck.  Some may say that they are afraid or that the transition would be too much.  The answer to this is that if you want it badly enough you can make it happen, if you don’t want it that bad then try the previously mentioned solutions.

Ultimately we deserve happiness in the workplace.  The work/life balance is different for all of us, and no matter how that balance is found part of it must include work.  Change what you can and except what you cannot change, if this does not help you find solace at your job then it is time for a more drastic move.  Have the courage to make yourself happy, you deserve it!
