Theme Weddings The Good The Bad And The Awful

Strangely prevalent and sometimes awful is the themed wedding.  The undead, clowns, animals and aliens, are all almost immediate passes (if you think otherwise a quick Google images search will prove my point).  Potentially ok are Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings or medieval themed weddings and video game or movie related weddings, you are very much walking the line with these themes as they can be somewhat charming or horribly cheesy.  Subtle themed weddings are better, themes based on places or ideas or historical times, usually integrated in such a way as to be clever and not blatantly obvious.   Stay away from everyone dressing up in costume as it takes away from the glamour and elegance that is an expected part of a wedding.  Themed costumes should incorporate one or two elements of the theme.  If full costume is a must, you have no choice but to go all out and everyone needs to participate, in a situation like this the right costume rental will often cost more then renting a tux.

The reason some of these are total failures and others somehow manage to be pulled off and look cool, even to those that aren’t into the particular idea or genre, comes down to three basic things; relevance, money and aesthetic.  As we stated above if you are going to do full costumes the whole thing needs to be done 150%, everyone needs to spend a good amount of money on their attire and throw the subtle idea out the window as the theme needs to be in everything.  As the day goes on your guests should be thinking “Wow that was so cool the way they decided to do that”.

Relevance is another key factor, basing your wedding theme around a little know video game that you and your bride play that most people have never heard of is going to be completely lost on your guests.  If you have a theme wedding based around a timeless classic or something that has been popular for decades, even people who have never seen the movie or played the game, they will still have heard of it.  To do something that most of your guests will not understand will equate to a total fail and will look like nothing more then everyone deviating from a centuries old tradition to have Halloween early.

The aesthetic is of tremendous importance.  If everything looks terrible or sloppily done, then that will be what everyone remembers about your wedding!  A wedding is supposed to be a beautiful thing, this is in part why gory undead or vampire themed weddings fail no matter how elaborate the costumes.  It just perverts a very pure and traditionally sacred thing.  If you do a themed wedding it is important to keep everything looking good, and if things aren’t necessarily going to be beautiful they better look really really cool.

Ultimately themed weddings are very much hit or miss, and more often then not they are a miss.  If you do decide to have a themed wedding keep in mind what can make them great and what makes them total failures, relevance, overall aesthetic, and the amount of money and effort that actually goes in to it.   It doesn’t hurt to do your research either and see what others have done and what the end result was.  Good luck!
