The Art Of Client Acquisition And Retention

The Art of Client Acquisition and Retention

A successful business only becomes successful because of its customers.  The struggle for so many companies is first attaining these customers and then retaining them, people have written books on the subject, people have spent their lives researching the subject, I am going to summarize the best way to get and retain customers in a page.  Actually the page is going to embellish two simple sentences.  Have a good product, the tell people about it.  Overly simplified?  Arrogantly stated?  I have no wish to simplify a very complex problem nor do I want my words to be taken as over-confident or pompous.   I will explain.

The best way to get customers and to keep them is to have something that they want, something that is in some way better then the competition.  Tell the truth about this product or service, do not exaggerate or manipulate because with a good product you won’t need too and chances are people will see right through you.  Today people are much more informed then they were 20 years ago, the days of selling ice to Eskimos are over.  People have a need and they will find a way to satisfy that need.

Most customers will research a product or service before they purchase it.  During this research your product needs to be somewhere where they can learn about it.  It does not necessarily need to be on the first page of Google (not that this doesn’t help) but there needs to be a way for people to find you.  You need to tell people about your product, if its good or better in some way just tell them the truth or show them.   Once you satisfy someone’s need and you show them they can trust you, you have just found a customer for life.  They will tell their friends and family and if they ever need your services again they will be happy to be able to skip all the research.  The method in which you tell people about the product will affect how fast the company grows, this is a problem many companies face but it is a subject for another blog.

So there it is in a nutshell, want to get customers and keep them?  Have a good product and tell people the truth about it.  It really is that simple, the days of trickery and manipulation are long gone, people are smarter these days and they will find you and the truth about you.

Project Wing

Project Wing

So Google X has announced that it has spent the last two years developing a prototype drone that will be able to deliver goods all over the world, the company calls the endeavor “Project Wing”.   A truly unbelievable undertaking and an effort that could change the face of consumerism forever.  We have already seen a huge change in how we shop in that most of us no longer go to the store and buy our items, rather we order them online.  If project wing takes off it will be utterly game changing.

Think about it for a moment, when we were younger you would drive to the mall, or to whatever store, and you would spend an hour or so looking around, perusing the wares, trying things on and doing what we have done for centuries, shopping.  Now many of us cruise the net rapidly clicking thru websites, viewing goods and reading reviews.  We fill up our digital shopping carts punch in a few passwords wait a few days and our purchases arrive on our doorsteps, pretty awesome really.  It makes me just the slightest bit sad and nostalgic because there was something exciting about holding something in your hands and comparing it to other items before you decided on your purchase.  There were so many interesting stores to visit and so many other items to see, many of which were much more impactful in there physical form then there digital form.  As cool as it once was we will continue to see a transition away from this because the other option is quicker, easier and cheaper, cheaper by far.

Project Wing is the next evolution of home shopping.  Having an unmanned drone will further mitigate costs as no driver is needed and fuel costs less.  Delivery times can be more accurately estimated and after a few kinks are worked out it will be safer then driving big rigs thousands of miles across country.  It will have it's growing pains of course, at first it most certainly will not be less expensive the technology and construction process will need to be refined over years, and there will be dangers, airspace concerns and malfunctions that could possibly send these little jets crashing into residential areas.  We will also see a whole system replaced and many will be out of the job as delivery truck drivers will be a thing of the past.  Such is the price of progress though, cold as it may seem and scary as it might be it is advancement, and it will be an obvious improvement over our current system.

In the end, if Project Wing is a success, and there is very little reason to believe that it won’t be, life as we know it will be very different, gone will be the days where we venture out to the shopping mall, gone will be the days of waiting unknowingly for our packages.  Scary, but most change is, there will be growing pains for sure but that is typical with innovation; Project Wing will be the next evolution of consumerism.

Staying Humble

Staying Humble

Humility and respect are the cornerstones of civilized society we are all best served by being decent to one another and understanding our own personal limitations.  No matter the success we achieve, the things we accomplish or the things that we build, it is important to stay humble.  No one, no matter how much money they have how many degrees they have earned or what their experiences have been, knows everything there is to know about everything and most people don’t know everything there is to know about anything.  Staying humble allows us to grow as individuals and as a society, it keeps us curious and careful, it keeps us always trying to be better.

Arrogance and ego are wrecking balls, we all must remain grounded firmly in reality, understanding that most of us really know very little, and that our milestone achievements are only the briefest of moments in the history of our world.   As soon as you think you know everything you become ignorant to all the new information and perspectives that are constantly being introduced and evolving everyday.  The smartest and best of us listen to everything they hear from claimed authorities.  Then those individuals have the ability to process all of that information and make a good decision.

The other issue with arrogance and ignorance is that once you begin to act like you are better then someone else that other person will (usually) stop interacting with you.  For many this may seem like a small loss as you obviously feel like you are better then this individual so the absence of their company is not felt.  But people are surprising and sometimes the lowest amongst us can make the greatest change or achieve the most powerful results.  People change, none of us know what the future holds, and tomorrow the rich can be poor and the poor can be rich.

Ego and pride will always hurt us, they are deceptive attributes that serve solely to erode and segregate.  Stay humble; understanding the reality of not knowing will only help you to expand your world and your personal knowledge.  It will help you and those around you to be better people.  The moment you think you know everything is the moment you stop learning.

How To Sell In 2015

How To Sell In 2015

In today’s market the average consumer is becoming more and more informed, today everyone is an expert on everything.  The question is, as a professional, how do you get your point across or truly inform a potential customer without sounding like you are trying to sell them something.  Most customers these days have a good idea of what they are looking for long before they even walk in the store.   These customers bolt for the door at the first sign of a sales pitch.  Why is this?  How can we impart product knowledge without sending our customers running?

Well, as we said, with the advancements that have been made in communications technology everyone is an authority.  So many people read a few articles on the internet write a review and deem themselves an authority.  While it is truly great that everyone has unlimited access to an near infinite amount of information reading about a product or service is different then actually working with it, using it, or experiencing it.  It becomes difficult, especially when dealing with equipment or services involving technical knowledge, to explain to a customer the difference between your services and someone else’s when it took you six years of education just to begin to understand the nature of your job.  The frustration becomes compounded when that person has been doing his homework and assumes he knows what you’re talking about, so then that the moment you attempt to explain some of the positives that your product has to offer his brain immediately shuts off.

The days of the pushy aggressive sales person are over.  No longer will those scare tactics, upselling and bait and switch tactics be effective, now the best way to convey information is to have a conversation.  Present everything to your potential client, pros and cons; tell them what they want to hear and what they don’t want to hear.  People these days like to be informed, they like to know, so if you offer to them a wealth of information they will appreciate it.   Ultimately it is a good thing because a good product will sell itself and the days of ripping people off and selling snake oil will come quickly to an end.

In todays world information is readily available to everyone.  Everyone is an authority and the traditional idea of selling turns off a great many potential buyers.  What we can do is stop selling and start informing.  Convey the information about your product or service in a way where your goal is to educate the client not make the sale.

An Executive Car Service For Executives

An Executive Car Service For Executives

Using an executive car service has countless benefits for the on-the-go business professional.  In business time is money, that’s a fact, any wasted moment equates to dollars lost, especially when you are operating in a high-end, heavily populated and fast-paced area like New York City or its suburbs. To be late for that sales presentation that business meeting or that networking event just won’t fly for most of New York’s professionals.  And in all honestly it shouldn’t, to be late is not acceptable no matter what the excuse, after all every one else was able to make it on time.  This is one area where having a reliable, punctual and professional executive car service becomes invaluable.

To consider traffic conditions, the best route to a new place, or accounting for all the possible problems and unforeseen delays one may encounter in every day travel thru the Greater Metropolitan area is just not possible for most executives.   Any businessperson doing their job is going to have a million and one things on their mind already, for them to consider and calculate ground logistics is just ridiculous.  A proper executive car service alleviates that stress and will get you to your event or meeting on time and in style, safely and with no worry, it may even offer a few last minute moments to prepare for that vital sales presentation or that pivotal marketing event.

Any good New York executive car service is not going to be cheap (if it is its not an executive car service then that’s not a company you want to rely on when it comes to business meetings) and is unfortunately not affordable for everyone.  But with the rising gas prices and the cost of owning a car these days an executive car service can be a great alternative for many.  All Star Limousine attempts to keep their pricing as reasonable as possible so as to make us as accessible as possible.  We specialize in high-end corporate transportation and we think we have come very close to perfecting the art of efficient ground logistics in an area with a high population density.  Let us do the worrying for you; you have enough on your mind already.  We are on time every time and when we pick you up we wont let you down!

Dress For Success

Dress For Success

In a perfect would we would all be judged on skill and merit alone, unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world.  At the risk of sounding horribly superficial the truth is what you look like matters when it comes to business.  If you’re reading this and shaking your head saying “That’s so untrue” or “That’s not fair” I would say that you’re not being totally honest with yourself.  Weather its sales, service or administration your appearance is important.

Let me present this scenario; you walk into a restaurant and you are sat at a table when your server approaches.  In the first hypothetical situation she has her hair up in neat little bun, she smells nice, is clean well groomed and well kept.  In the second scenario the waitress is haggard and sweaty, her make up is smeared and she has dirt or some other substance caked under her nails.  Which one of these waitresses would you prefer?  This person is handling your food, I would imagine that you would prefer it to be as clean and germ free as possible.

So now your saying well of course that’s the food service industry that’s different, and of course she should be clean, but that’s more about hygiene and infection then an actual ascetic.  I will tell you that it’s a combination of both but ill give you a second situation.  You are in charge of the marketing department for a large corporation and you have a meeting with sales person who is attempting to sell you  ad space.  The first rep comes in and he’s dressed neatly, full suit, tie done right, shoes polished, shaved and smiling, he is neat and organized and his appearance reflects that.  The second sales rep comes in tie loosened, no jacket, uncut fingernails and he looks like he has left-over lunch stuck in his beard.  Now of course there are other things that would impact your decision when choosing where to place your ad but all other things created equal (price, exposure exc.), whom would you choose?  Even on a subconscious level the first guy is going to stand out because the way he keeps himself is a reflection of how he will conduct business.

So again we are all judged and we all judge (weather you want to admit it or not) by appearance.  In business, and in truth in all facets of your life, it is important to dress your best.  At the very least look at it as a reflection of your professionalism, people will subconsciously associate your neatness with competence.  It may sound superficial but its important to dress for success.

Motivation

Motivation

Previously we have discussed negotiation and how to get others to agree with your perspective or way of thinking; today I would like to talk about motivation.  Specifically what motivates your employees, most would jump right in and dripping with sarcasm say “money” and while that may be true it is not the most powerful motivator and at best it is only one of many.  Motivating our employees is something important to all of us, obviously we all want to get the most out of our workers and there are many ways to do so.

Psychological motivation can be done in several ways and can be far more powerful then typically given credit for (it is also one of the least costly and simplest methods of motivation).  In our conversation about negotiation we talked about the ability to get others to do what we need through playing on motivators, love, fear, desire all of these things still hold true for the purposes of getting out employees to work.  Fear of losing their job or being replaced, love of a position or a superior, the desire to clime the corporate ladder or get that next promotion, all of these are motivating factors in business.  There are other ways beside playing on desires; communicate with your employees, talk with them and build relationships with them, they need to see you as an individual, an actual human being and they will be more willing to take that extra step for you.

Of course we all know that money motivates, as do material items.  Instead of a raise on occasion it may be more meaningful to give someone a gift tailored to his or her needs or likings, a company car a particular piece of jewelry.  Recently I was the recipient of a beautiful watch that was unexpected and very thoughtful, I am not a watch person but this specific piece was perfectly tailored to my style.  It was a great gift and a powerful motivator.  It was also given unexpectedly which made it mean that much more.

Finally we have motivation that comes in the form of non-material gifts, things such as health benefits, autonomy and paid time off.  These can be the best type of motivators because they can often be relatively inexpensive and they can also quite often carry the most meaning.  Public affirmation of a job well done, a new title or responsibility, even to just hear the words that indicate appreciation, then there are those more traditional non-material rewards like employees benefits, paid vacation time, a company car or a coveted parking spot.

All of these are great motivators and alternative rewards to what is done more traditionally.  It is important to know the people who work for you, know what makes them happy and attempt to reward those that deserve it.   There are many ways to motivate but there is also a best way tailored to each individual, find that way and watch the success that follows.

Knowing Your Limits

 Knowing Your Limits

The old saying “You are only given what you can handle” is a nice one, and one that many find comfort in.  I think that yes the possibility of a higher power exists and the fact that he may dole out to us certain situations and a certain “work load” based on our own individual abilities is a nice idea.  I also think that there may be an alternative origin to this popular saying, I think that in reality we have a great deal of control over our environments, and that subconsciously we effect them far more then we realize.   Along this line of thinking we may only be given what we are able to handle because we only take on what we are sure we are able too.

Now I am not denying or affirming the existence of any higher being (that is a deeper subject for a different type of blog), what I am advocating is the ability for us to take responsibility for our lives and out situations.   You know, or at least have an idea of, what you are capable of and how much you can handle at once.  Some of us have the stamina and strength to work harder and longer, some of us have the headspace to consider and address many problems all at once, some of us have the will to remain calm under lots of stress.  Being self-aware will help you navigate easier through life.

A good analogy is at All Star Limousine we only take on a certain amount of work, we only book a finite amount of jobs and then we stop.   Many companies in this industry over book and attempt to take on more work then they can handle, they then try to sub-contract or “farm out” that work to other companies.  This has the potential to create a multitude of problems, you now have a faceless company doing another company a favor for a discounted rate and most likely they are squeezing this job into their schedule last minute, cars run late, they aren’t clean, they are not the models ordered, people, justifiably so, become upset.  All Star could take on more work, we have the vehicles, the drivers and the timing can be made to work, but by knowing our limits and looking to prioritize customer satisfaction over incoming revenue we choose to operate the way that we do, and we are very successful.  Its about knowing the limits and keeping your priorities in order, in the service industry the customer should be happy, all the time, profits will come if your customers are satisfied.

In the end we are only giving what we can mange because we only take what we know we can handle.  Be self-aware enough to not over extend yourself, know your limitations, know your strengths and know your weaknesses.  You will have an easier time of things and find truer and better success.
