Nassau Coliseum

Nassau Coliseum

The Majesty of the Barclays Center will now extend into the rest of Nassau County.  On Monday September 23rd 2013 almost exactly a year after the Barclay Center was open to the public, Bruce Ratner, the genius behind Brooklyn’s Barclay Center, and his company Forest City Ratner won the bid to renovate the 41-year-old Nassau Coliseum.  Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously and approved a $229 million bid by Ratner’s company.

The blueprints propose an impressive looking steel structure composed of an exterior latticework of beams that appear to undulate and writhe as they encompass the slightly downsized arena.  The interior will be streamlined down from 18,000 seats to a sleek 13,000 and the corridors and restrooms will all be redone.   The design proposal is nothing short of beautiful.  The question is that will the newly renovated arena be able to turn a profit and will Forest City Ratner be able to fulfill their contract and not impose upon the county or the taxpayers.  This question is in part raised due to the migration of the Islanders from Nassau Coliseum to the New Barclays Center, without 40 guaranteed events will the Arena be able to cover cost and generate the required revenue?

Ultimately we will see, Forest City Ratner did an amazing job with the new Barclays Center and hopefully they can duplicate their success with the renovations of the iconic Nassau Coliseum.  The streamlined and aesthetically pleasing proposed changes will hopefully make up for the absence of the Islanders and their will be minimal, if any, monetary imposition on the county or the people.  The theory is sound but only time will tell, regardless, the possibilities are exciting this could mean big things for the Nassau County area.

Project Wing

Project Wing

So Google X has announced that it has spent the last two years developing a prototype drone that will be able to deliver goods all over the world, the company calls the endeavor “Project Wing”.   A truly unbelievable undertaking and an effort that could change the face of consumerism forever.  We have already seen a huge change in how we shop in that most of us no longer go to the store and buy our items, rather we order them online.  If project wing takes off it will be utterly game changing.

Think about it for a moment, when we were younger you would drive to the mall, or to whatever store, and you would spend an hour or so looking around, perusing the wares, trying things on and doing what we have done for centuries, shopping.  Now many of us cruise the net rapidly clicking thru websites, viewing goods and reading reviews.  We fill up our digital shopping carts punch in a few passwords wait a few days and our purchases arrive on our doorsteps, pretty awesome really.  It makes me just the slightest bit sad and nostalgic because there was something exciting about holding something in your hands and comparing it to other items before you decided on your purchase.  There were so many interesting stores to visit and so many other items to see, many of which were much more impactful in there physical form then there digital form.  As cool as it once was we will continue to see a transition away from this because the other option is quicker, easier and cheaper, cheaper by far.

Project Wing is the next evolution of home shopping.  Having an unmanned drone will further mitigate costs as no driver is needed and fuel costs less.  Delivery times can be more accurately estimated and after a few kinks are worked out it will be safer then driving big rigs thousands of miles across country.  It will have it's growing pains of course, at first it most certainly will not be less expensive the technology and construction process will need to be refined over years, and there will be dangers, airspace concerns and malfunctions that could possibly send these little jets crashing into residential areas.  We will also see a whole system replaced and many will be out of the job as delivery truck drivers will be a thing of the past.  Such is the price of progress though, cold as it may seem and scary as it might be it is advancement, and it will be an obvious improvement over our current system.

In the end, if Project Wing is a success, and there is very little reason to believe that it won’t be, life as we know it will be very different, gone will be the days where we venture out to the shopping mall, gone will be the days of waiting unknowingly for our packages.  Scary, but most change is, there will be growing pains for sure but that is typical with innovation; Project Wing will be the next evolution of consumerism.

The Long Island Hospitality Ball

The Long Island Hospitality Ball

The Long Island Hospitality Ball is a Gala organized by Keith Hart, a cancer survivor and hospitality mainstay, and Daria Carioscia to raise money for The American Cancer Society.  This event is a true show of humanitarianism as hundreds of venues across long island donate their time and services to help the fight against cancer.  In years past donations have raised over $400,000 to help combat this awful disease.  This is an unbelievable achievement for an amazing organization and the most worthy of causes.

This year we honored several special guests, icons in the service and hospitality industry.  These individuals are real heroes in Americas fight against cancer.  Victor and Antony Scotto, professionally known as the "Scotto Brothers", owners of such fine establishments as Chateau Briand and Fox Hollow.  Reynold Leone, owner of Zacharies nightclub in East Meadow, and E.Loyd Sobel CEO of Empire Merchants were all honored for their selfless contributions to society and various charities.  Thank you gentlemen for the incredible example you set.

Thank you also to several other individuals for their sponsorship and generous donations.  George Voutsinas, owner of Chateau La Mer and the ultimate warm weather venue Pop's Seafood Shack in Island Park, Eddie Maiorino owner of Il Classico restaurant and caterers in Massapequa, , Jim Powers owner of All Star Limousine Worldwide based out of Lindenhurst and Dante A. Ciampaglia the architect responsible for designing many of long islands popular halls and restaurants.

This is the party of the year.  Long island's social elite kicked off the summer at the stunning Crest Hollow Country Club with the third annual Long Island Hospitality Ball. It was an evening of great food great drink, laughter and friends as over 2000 people came out to support the fight against cancer.  All manner of individuals, primarily representing the hospitality and service industry, rubbed shoulders from bartenders and coat-checks to the owners and managers of some of long island's premier establishments.  These are the people that breath life into long island's social scene, and this beautiful place would not be what it is if not for them.

You would have been hard pressed to find a sad face in this crowd.  A plethora of libations, hors d’oeuvres, appetizers and cocktails from some of the finest restaurants in the area were thoroughly enjoyed by all, and when the eating and drinking was done the entertainment began.  Fireworks, live music, magicians and DJ's entertained the decked out crowd all night and when it was time for crest hollow to close its doors those with the where withal took the party to Four in Melville. Once there the celebrants graced the dance floor of this amazing nightclub and wound down the night.

Elegance, class and beauty were the words of the evening.  Nowhere else can you find such gorgeous grounds, incredible food and wonderful people.  Truly a night to be remembered and I am already looking forward to next years Long Island Hospitality Ball.

Apple's iphone 5s and the ios7

Posted On: September 18, 2013

Apple’s iphone 5s and the ios7

Apple’s new ios7 is the newest mobile update for Apple’s smartphone and mobile technology.  On the eve of its release it is met with excitement but also with much skepticism.   This is a piece of software designed to be the foundation of the iphone, ipad, ipod touch, and most especially the new iphone 5s, the ios7 marks the biggest software change since 2007.  It promises to make the user experience faster, simpler and more efficient.  What it is endeavoring to do specifically is up the support from a 32-bit system to a 64-bit system, now this sounds great but it will not be fully compatible with all current apps nor any phone that is 3g or less, now enter the iphone 5s.  The iphone 5s is being touted as the fastest phone on the market, the fastest by a long shot.

Detractors say that Apple’s promises of a better product are nothing more then marketing fluff, as those with-out the hardware won’t be able to make use of the available software.  Further more that even those on the technological cutting edge wont see much a difference in the performance of their devices.  Why is this?  Well most apps in their current incarnation don’t need a 64-bit system to operate smoothly and properly, as they already do.  Another potential problem is that apps that are not updated may have issues with the new ios7.  Apple has attempted to mitigate that problem by rolling out a very user-friendly package with the software that has made the lives of app developers very simple, streamlining the update process.

The iphone 5s, scheduled to be released this Friday Sept. 20th is, by far, the fastest phone on the market.  In addition to a fingerprint scanning touch ID and a picture perfect camera the speed of the iphone 5s is what will make it stand out against the competition.   The results of the SunSpider test, which is the standard speed test companies try to optimize for, show that the new iphone 5s is over 300 ms faster then the iphone 5.  That may not sound like a lot but it really is, they are equating this phone to lighting.

Apple has promised the next evolution of mobile technology with the ios7 software and the new iphone 5s.  Marketing experts are saying that it is not necessary and that it may be too early for such a change but there are many that believe the change is inevitable and Apple is just getting an early jump on it.  The thought is that of course mobile technology will ultimately be updated to that level it is simply a matter of time.  The question is are we ready for it?

The Spirit Of The Season

The Spirit of The Season

All year long we look forward to the Holidays.  No matter what holiday you celebrate the beginning of winter signals a time of celebration.  We spend time with our friends and family who we don’t get to see so often and we look anew at those that we see everyday.  We wrack our brans and our wallets trying to find that special gift for that special someone in a futile attempt to top last year’s home run.  The next time your out braving the traffic clogged streets try and remember what the season for giving is really all about.

Often times we get caught up in the mad rush of the holiday season.  Careening through over crowded shopping malls and blaring on your horns as we inch through congested streets.  We glare hatefully at the driver of the Ford Taurus who wouldn’t let us merge over, and we gesture wildly at the elderly couple that is taking too long to make their way across the parking lot.  We fight tooth and nail for the last Tickle Me Elmo, and we yell in triumph as we snatch the last Frozen Elsa doll from the weak hands of a 4 year old.  If you think I’m exaggerating a quick Google search of Black Friday will tell you that unfortunately I am not.

I implore you to try and remember what the holidays are supposed to be about.  Peace on earth and goodwill towards men they say in the song.  Think of your family of course but try and think about the strangers that cross your path every day.  Think about those that may have less then you and may really be struggling this Holiday season.  The driver of the Taurus may be occupied trying to figure out how she’s going to buy that one toy for her little girl this Christmas and still pay the cable bill, she may not have even seen you trying to get over.  The old man and women might be taking so long to cross the street because she just got out of the hospital.   You never know what other people are going through, hopefully their lives are just fine but it never hurts to keep the spirit of the season and smile at that stranger taking too long at the cash register.  If we all extended each other the same courtesies and considerations imagine the world we would have.

So even though we look forward to the holidays all year long lets make sure we remember what they are really all about.  You will never know what’s going on in that stranger’s life but be the hand that helps instead of the hand that hurts.  Keep the spirit of the season and witness as the world changes around you.  Happy Holidays!

Book too early and the seasonal deals won’t be applicable; book too late and the deals will be long gone.  The airlines aren’t any help when it comes to this stuff (as you can imagine) because it typically has to do with supply and demand, as flights book up the deals begin to dwindle as the time for the flights encroaches and the seats still need to be filled the price per seat begins to drop.  The best way to track and anticipate the best time to buy is to look at airline sales over the last year.

Now is the time to book flights for this years Christmas Season, do not let the opportunity for a decent deal pass you by.   It’s the quintessential example of supply and demand, they need to fill seats they drop the price, seats are filling up quickly they raise the price.   Prior planning and due diligence can save you some money here so just pay attention to the trends and if you’re looking to travel this Christmas Season book your flights today!
