Great Restaurants Near LaGuardia International Airport

LaGuardia International airport is a major commuter hub located in the NY metropolitan area.   With over a dozen airlines carrying tens of thousands of passengers daily the queens area surrounding LGA can get a little congested.  No one wants to fight gridlock looking for a reputable place to eat only to be tired and hungry and end up with an over cooked steak or chewy calamari.  In the interest of ravenous jet setters everywhere here are three top notch restaurants located within 15 minuets of LaGuardia airport.

5 Napkin Burger in Astoria.  If you haven’t experienced the 5 Napkin Burger chain yet you are seriously missing out.  The restaurant gets its name from the monstrous signature burgers they serve and it is well earned.  Primarily serving American cuisine 5 napkins offers a Varity of dishes from around the world including several unique burgers that are exclusive to this Avant-guard burger chain.  Serving an a la carte brunch on Saturday and Sunday 5 Napkin Burger in Astoria-Queens is located less then 4 miles from LGA.

Uncle Jacks Steakhouse.  Uncle Jacks is just about 10 miles from LaGuardia Airport and it’s claim as “The Best Steakhouse in New York” is not too far off.  Now given there are some dynamite steakhouses in the NY metro area but Uncle Jacks is certainly a contender.  Uncle Jacks boasts several locations but the original was founded in the early 1930’s and was titled simply Jack’s.   Their mantra is “Where superior quality and obsessive dedication to craft are the norm”.  With an impressive wine menu and the finest USDA Prime Beef Uncle Jacks is a steakhouse not to be missed.

Trattoria L’incontro Italian is the go too Italian restaurant near LaGuardia airport.  Located only three miles from LGA Trattoria L’incontro is the perfect place to stop in after a long flight, whether you just want to have a nice glass of wine at the wine bar or you are looking for some fine Italian dining.   Hand painted murals and an open brick over lend this establishment an air of tradition and comfort and this feeling is also reflected in their vast and somewhat unique menu.  A variety of brick over pizzas are offered at Trattoria L’inconto as well as some very interesting creations (including a brick oven pizza stuffed with chocolate).  Trattoria also offers the type of cuisine you would expect from a restaurant known for its fine dining dishes such as fried calamari, muscles in white sauce and grilled octopus are some of the more popular choices on the menu.

Russo’s on the Bay (an unbelievable experience)

Out of all the catering halls in New York Russo’s on the Bay stands in a class all its own.  Located on Cross Bay Blvd, in famous Howard Beach, Russo’s towers above the water, an impressive and incredible structure.  Hospitality has been a tradition in the Russo family for over fifty years; in this half-century the art of service has been perfected.  When one envisions a party or celebration your imagination can take you only so far, Russo’s on the Bay takes it to the level beyond.  There is no place quite as regal, no staff quite as attentive and no food quite as tantalizing as that which is found at Russo’s on the Bay.

The tradition of perfect service began over fifty years ago when Frank Russo Sr. opened Villa Russo in Richmond Hill.  Their dedication to excellence, attention to detail and experience in fine dining was passed on to Mr. Russo’s son, Frank Russo Jr.   These skills and the art of hospitality have since been fine-tuned again and again by the service professionals at Russo’s on The Bay.  The Russo’s have mastered the art of creating cherished memories and facilitating unbelievable experiences.  The décor, the establishment itself, the staff, the food and the overall ambiance is nothing short of perfect at Russo’s on the Bay.

Russo’s on the Bay is a completely autonomous facility, they provide everything on site, from the baked goods to the tailoring even down to garbage disposal it is all done in house.  This guarantees several things, one the food (which is unbelievable in and of itself, the shear amount of it is unreal, you haven’t seen a Viennese hour until you have attended a wedding at Russo’s on the Bay) is prepared fresh and right in the kitchens of Russo’s.  Second anything you could possibly want or need can be done within the facility, they literally have it all and it is all top shelf, need a suit pant hemmed no problem, need car service they have it, craving a special something you don’t see on the menu or behind the bar not a problem, any want desire or need is immediately addressed by the world class staff and a state of the art compound.

The décor is unparalleled; classic mosaics, incredible lighting and rooms furnished with materials imported from around the world, the overall effect is stunning.  No other venue in New York and possibly the world boasts such a grand and elegant ambiance.  Their staff is fanatical about their customer service and commitment to perfection, every detail is considered, addressed and accounted for, there is nothing that is not anticipated or thought of.  With over 200 years of combined experience the senior management team is unbelievable with backgrounds ranging from Walt Disney World to some of the most prestigious and famous restaurants and venues in the world.

Russo’s offers an unrivaled experience to all of their brides and grooms as well as those celebrating other milestone events.  The facility, the staff and of course the unbelievable cuisine is literally unforgettable.   Service and excellence are taken beyond expectations at Russo’s on the Bay, experience the majesty.

Five Zagat Rated Steak Houses In NYC

Five Zagat Rated Steak Houses In NYC

Maintaining our tradition of identifying the top restaurants in NYC today we will present Zagat’s top rated steak houses in the NYC area.  Due to the abundance of corporate carnivores in the New York area we will talk about the top five steak houses as opposed to our usual three.  There are some heavy hitters here and some boast names recognized the world over; the New York Steak House may be the most frequented type of eatery in NYC.   Here are the five best Zagat rated steak houses in New York City.

Peter Lugers Steak House may be the best steak house in the city.  Voted NYC’s top steak house for an amazing 28 years in a row Peter Lugers is doing something right.  The dining room is a bit on the bright side, the waiters aren’t overly friendly, Peter Lugers doesn’t even take credit cards they are cash only!  However, you will not find a better porterhouse steak anywhere in the world, Zagat calls it “the gold standard” of steaks.

Sparks Steak House has been in operation since 1966 and is located right near Grand Central Station.  It is known as a “man’s steak house” and the décor, portions and regular clientele perpetuate that theme.  Sparks has no qualms about being known as a man’s restaurant, after all it is a steak house.  Massive slabs of prime aged beef are served at a premium price in a less then thrilling dining room, but Sparks remains “The quintessential New York Steakhouse”.

Wolfgang's Steakhouses are known for their smooth service, varied menu and “cooked to perfection” chops.  A nicer ambiance then some of their contemporaries Wolfgangs maintains a tried and true recipe for delicious steaks and a successful business.  A Large and spacious main dining area can at times become downright chaotic but its all part of the mood.   Four Decades of excellence has honed the craft of world famous Wolfgang Zwiener and his East 54th street location is a perfect example of the quality of his culinary genius.

Del Frisco’s is known not only for their incredible prime aged beef but also for the action and excitement surrounding the always-packed restaurant.  Floor to ceiling windows dominate the vista of this sprawling three-story steak house operated by manager Scott Gould and offer a view of bustling 6th avenue.  Accessible, exciting and delicious Del Frisco’s offers a bit more then its more traditional competition.

Smith and Wollensky was opened by Alan Stillman in October of 1977, often a tad underrated Smith and Wollensky was the original “quintessential New York Steakhouse”.  One of the highest grossing restaurants in the county they offer only USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and hand butchered on premises.  The walls of this NYC icon are covered in reviews and letters from all manner of individuals praising the amazing venue and its fare.

Three Of The Best Sushi Restaurants In NYC

Posted On: November 26, 2013

Three of the Best Sushi Restaurants in NYC

Today we are going to discuss the world of NYC sushi.  Previously we have presented the best steak houses in the city, the best restaurants for fine ding and the best places for shellfish and seafood, now its on to the raw fish.  Sushi is a personal favorite of mine and, as usual, NYC presents us with a wide range of options for this traditional Japanese fare.  Here are three incredible places to get unbeatable sushi in NYC.

15 East located, not surprisingly, at 15 E 15th street is presided over by Jewel Bako veteran Masato Shimizu.  Shimizu imports only the freshest first-rate seafood flown in daily from Japan and his creations are culinary masterpieces.  The dark wood bar rests commandingly beneath a high airy ceiling and presents a feeling of importance and authority.  As if to emphasize this point Shimuzu owns a massive collection of well worn books depicting detailed fish anatomy charts and diagrams which he uses to impart a friendly education to his customers.  Shimuzu serves up excellence and education all with flair and a smile.

Kanoyama caters to a bit of a younger crowd that haunts the streets in the East Village, throngs of co-eds flock to this restaurant known for its amazing nigiri and glistening skin-on jack fish.  Veterans Nobuyuki Shikanai and Daigo Yamaguchi run a nonchalant kitchen staff that’s serves up meltingly fresh sushi and shashimi.  Time Out says do your self a favor and “Order anything on the menu with toro on it”.  The newly named Koi (not to be confusing) comprises a large space, part of which is the heavily frequented saki bar.  So if you’re looking for a quiet meal and some time to reflect on the excellence that is Kanoyama find a nice place in the back room to enjoy that sweet-soy miso cod.  Catering to all, Kanoyama offers its fare at a substantially lower price then most of its contemporaries.

2012 saw the rise of fine-dining impresario David Bouley’s Ichimura at Brushstroke.  The phenomenally fresh and buttery sushi is presented on elegant plates prepared by Eiji Ichimura.  Blond wood and amber lighting is complemented by Lacquered Japanese ceramic ware and creates a gorgeous and traditional ambiance.   Their signature dish is the chawan-mushi a steamed egg custard decadently topped with a black truffle sauce and melt in your mouth snippets of Dungeness Crab.  This Michelin-starred venue is not to be missed by anyone proclaiming to be a sushi aficionado.

Fine Italian Dining In New York City

Fine Italian Dining In New York City

Continuing with our exploration of the top restaurants in the NYC area this week we will delve into the realm of authentic Italian cuisine.  This is not to be confused with an Italian Delicatessen or sandwich shop nor will it include pizzerias (as again there are far to many choice venues for us to include them all in one presentation).  Today we will talk about traditional Italian restaurants, and with the interest of all in mind these three incredible restaurants will each represent a general price range so we will have an Italian restaurant suitable for fine dining and two more that offer a more casual format for feasting.   Here are three amazing Italian eateries located in the greater metropolitan area.

Frankies 457 Spuntino is our more casual establishment and was established in Carrol Gardens by Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli (known collectively as “the Franks”) in 2004.  Immediately loved by all “the Franks” capitalized on their success by opening a steak house and a café all in close proximity to the original venue.  Fluffy meatballs, fine cured meats and an impressive assortment of cheeses have helped make Frankies a neighborhood staple.  Not to say that they don’t cater to an out of town crowd, quite the contrary, and if ever passing through the Carrol Gardens area I highly recommend stopping in at Frankies 457 for a meatball sandwich.

Maialino is the product of owner Danny Meyer and master chef Nick Anderer.  It is a  culinary masterpiece and offers truly authentic roman cuisine.  Anderer delights the palate with cunningly replicated dished from the classic era that include a delectable anchovy bread sauce, carbonara, braised tripe as well as the restaurant’s namesake ,The Maialino, a succulent piglet haunch basted in mouth watering pig fat.  A restaurant that is authentic in every sense of the word and offers a fine fare that is quite original to the venue.

In 2005 Mario Batali opened Del Posto a massive establishment with far reaching ambitions this eatery has become the go to for New Yorkers when they are in search of fine Italian dining.   The classic Grand Piano contributes to the elegant ambiance of this beautiful Italian restaurant.   Batali may well be one of the most talked about chefs in town and has opened several very successful restaurants that consistently provide excellence.  His ambition to turn Del Posto into the first four star Italian restaurant in NYC may very well have the possibility to become reality.
