Facebook’s New Face

Facebook’s New Face

Facebook is finally rolling out its revamped news feed.  This change was announced about a year ago and has since been highly anticipated.   The newsreel will now boast several aesthetic changes including larger pictures and slight changes to the cosmetics of some of the buttons on the news feed.  I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but it seems that the changes are going to make the look of Facebook remarkably similar to another popular social media platform.

The wait is over and the cosmetic adjustments to the Facebook news feed are here!  You will notice now that some pictures and photos in the news feed span the entire width of the page.  Also note that now font changes are available and the buttons along the right rail have been made larger.  These changes are much more subtle then what Facebook had announced a year ago, but most would agree that there was very little wrong with the current rendition of the newsreel (if anything at all).  Facebook promises that no changes will be made to the way ads or stories surface or the reach that they have.  This remains a primary concern for many of the social media platform’s primary users.  One slight peculiarity that some may note is the remarkable similarity the newsreel will have to Google+.  Not that there is anything wrong with this as Google+ is well known for the vibrant pictures and gifs that seem to dominate most of its circles.

Ultimately change is good, even subtle change.  Facebook continues to be the dominant contender in the social media world and it is the standard to which many of its competitors hold themselves too.  Recently the giant has made several large purchases and several changes to its algorithms, it only stands to reason that a facelift was in order.

The Super Bowl Is Coming

Posted On: November 01, 2013

The Super Bowl Is Coming

This year Met Life Stadium, the home of the New York Giants, will host super bowl XLVIII.  This will mark the 48th Super Bowl in American Football and the 44th annual championship game of the modern era NFL.  It is scheduled to be held on February 2, 2014 and will be the first Super Bowl to be played outdoors in a cold weather environment.  The North East is excited and proud to host this years coming Super Bowl, the season still has a long way to go but a few of the teams that are looking great so far are the New Orleans Saints, the Greenbay Packers and the Denver Broncos led by Peyton Manning.

The location of this year’s championship game has been the subject of much debate.  Because the game will be held outdoors, in cold weather and is also the first game to be played on artificial turf in 38 years some of the franchises feel that there may be an unfair advantage.   Those teams that are used to playing in a colder climate may have a bit of a leg up on their rivals from the south and mid-west.  Harsher weather conditions also may play a role, as February in the North East is not known for its calm weather in the later winter months.

Despite the unpredictable conditions there are some real powerhouse teams this year.  Peyton Manning and the Broncos are all but unstoppable reaching the halfway mark at 7-1.  Manning is poised to not only break most single passing records but to raise the bar to levels before un-thought of.   Amongst many achievements perhaps the most impressive is his 2,919 yards passing after only eight games.  This is an unbelievable statistic considering the 3,000 yard passing season was only born in 1960 when Johnny Unitas threw for 3,099 yards.   Manning is also leading or tied for the lead in completions (237), yards per attempt (8.8), passing touchdowns (29) and total touchdowns (30), over all an incredible player.

Taking into account the harsher climate and the unpredictable weather Super Bowl XLVIII is certainly going to be an interesting one.  It’s still too early to call but the Broncos are almost a guaranteed contender this year and Manning has a whole half a season to continue to break records and wow the fans.  I am thinking we may see a Broncos Packers match up in Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford I just hope both teams remember to bring their long johns.

The U.S. Tennis Open

The U.S. Tennis Open

August 26th 2013 through September 9th 2013 showcases this years United States Open Tennis Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City.  The U.S. Open is the fourth and final hard-court tennis tournament comprising the Grand Slam, the other three being Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the French Open.  The U.S. open is the modern incarnation of the world’s oldest tennis championship, the U.S. National Championship first established in 1881.

Originally titled the U.S National Singles Championship for Men the tournament was held in Newport Rhode Island.  It was not until 1915 that the Tennis Championship match was brought too Queens NY.  In 1968 the U.S. Open became what we know today after 5 separate events (women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and the original men’s singles) were combined into one.

Since that time technology and politics have made many changes and the U.S. Open Tennis Championship has evolved into one of the most anticipated and watched sporting events in the world.  Currently sponsored by JP Morgan Chase the U.S .Open is owned and organized by the USTA which is a non-profit agency and the proceeds from high ticket prices are used to promote the development of tennis in the United States.

This year some of the talent to keep an eye on includes Vicki Flores, a 14 year old from Iowa who has been methodically climbing the ranks to fight her way into the U.S. Open Women’s Singles tournament.  Flores, although young, will not be the youngest women in history to compete in the U.S. Open if she qualifies (although she is one of very few) Tracy Austin currently holds the title of youngest women to ever win a professional tournament.  Youth also dominated the Southern California sectional qualifier with teenagers winning the men’s and women’s signals as well as the mixed doubles.  The Two-Time champion Juan Martin del Potro, 24 years old hailing from Argentina, currently claims the top seed as is a fierce competitor for the men’s singles tournament.

Always promising to be a memorial event this years U.S. Open commences on August 26th.  Transportation can be provided by host airline Emirates airlines, the always-reliable LIRR and of course All Star Limousine and All Star Limousine Worldwide.  For tickets and scheduling check out www.usopen.org.

Top Five Things To Do On Long Island In The Fall

Top 5 Things To Do On Long Island In The Fall

Long Island New York is a beautiful place to live.  In an area with such a diverse geography including farms, beaches, woodlands, lakes and rivers, there is rarely a shortage of things to do no matter the season.  Autumn on Long Island is especially festive as fall heralds the harvest.  Apple orchards, pumpkin picking and haunted houses are prevalent across the island and make awesome activities amidst the changing of the leaves and the colors of fall.

With so many choices all the options can be a bit overwhelming so after extensive research we have compiled a list below of five of the best things to do on long island in the fall.

1)   Go apple or pumpkin picking.  Fall is the time of the harvest and Long Island farms have some of their best crops in Autumn.  With apple orchids and pumpkin patches a plenty there’s a lot to choose from.   Check out Stakey’s Pumpkin Farm in Aquebogue a sprawling 26-acre farm that has every variety of pumpkin and gourde imaginable.

2)   Experience one of the many fall festivals on long island.  You have your Oktoberfest and even Septemberfest that are celebrated at several locations on long island, but then each town has its own harvest celebration.  Check out; Oyster Fest in Oyster Bay or The Long Island Fall Festival at Heckscher Park in Huntington both unique events that should not be missed.

3)   Visit a haunted house or attraction.  Long Island is a great place for ghost hunting.  There are nearly as many “real” haunted locations as there are fabricated ones.  Weather your interested in a truly frightening experience or you are looking for something you and the kids can do Long Island has several options.  Take a ride down Sweet Hollow Road in Huntington or have a drink at Katies in Smithtown both infamously haunted locales.

4)   In addition too the orchards and patches there are some very unique experiences that come around when the leaves begin to change colors.  Check out the display at Old Westbury Gardens.  The Rise of the Jack O’ Lanterns is a month long event presented by dozens of local artists featuring over 5,000 hand carved Jack O’ Lanterns that illuminate the paths through the gorgeous gardens at Old Westbury.

5)   Enjoy the season; the fall foliage on Long Island is like very few places in the world.  When the time is just right the landscape is an explosion of reds, oranges and yellows.  Just a drive down the street can be an experience.  To truly enjoy the fall color that long island has to offer check out The Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Oakdale or The Oyster Bay Cutting Fields.
