The Future of Facebook

The Future of Facebook

Recently many organizations have speculated upon the future of Facebook.  A recent study was done by Princeton University that compared the social media platform to a virus and predicted it would be all but extinct within the next ten years.  Many of the new social media platforms such as Snapchat and twitter have certain positives and applications that Facebook just does not have.  Studies show that the younger generations are just not using Facebook as much as their older peers.  What does this all mean?  Are we seeing the end of this social media giant?  Personally I think the end of Facebook is something we will not see for a very long time.

The Princeton study that was recently done was terribly pessimistic in regards to the future of the social media powerhouse and seemed to be presented from a very biased point of view.  It talked about Facebook as if it was an infection or an addiction that would eventually wear itself out as its users became more and used to its features and its applications.  The Princeton Study was officially addressed and fervently refuted by Facebook Spokesman Marc Zuckerberg.  The thought that Facebook could lose 80% of its users by 2017 is a bit extreme and founded on very precarious grounds, in reality there is very little evidence to support such a claim.

It is true that younger generations are starting to shy away from the social media platform that their older siblings and parents are so into, often times young teens want to be a part of something that is exclusive or more designed to be specifically for them.   Facebook understands this and is becoming more and more like the next generations Linkedin.   Facebook is also becoming much more mobile friendly with several new applications and options for its users.  Its young management team is on top of their game and will not stand idly by while their platform is surpassed by upstarts.

Facebook is here to stay.  There are several reason why including momentum, versatility and a huge following.  Yes there are many other platforms that offer a different experience but Facebook is the standard to which they are all compared.  This Social media giant is not one that will be quickly or easily felled, Facebook will be around for a long time.

The U.S Open

The U.S. Open Begins

August 26th 2013 through September 9th 2013 showcases this years United States Open Tennis Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City.  The U.S. Open is the fourth and final hard-court tennis tournament comprising the Grand Slam, the other three being Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the French Open.  The U.S. open is the modern incarnation of the world’s oldest tennis championship, the U.S. National Championship first established in 1881.

Originally titled the U.S National Singles Championship for Men the tournament was held in Newport Rhode Island.  It was not until 1915 that the Tennis Championship match was brought too Queens NY.  In 1968 the US Open became what we know today after 5 separate events (women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and the original men’s singles) were combined into one.

Since that time technology and politics have made many changes and the US Open Tennis Championship has evolved into one of the most anticipated and watched sporting events in the world.  Currently sponsored by JP Morgan Chase the U.S. Open is owned and organized by the USTA which is a non-profit agency.  The proceeds from high-ticket prices are used to promote the development of tennis in the United States.

Tennis today is not about one man dominating the better part of a decade.  The days of Federer and McEnroe finishing off consecutive titles are behind us.  On the fast, hard courts of Flushing Meadows one needs to be versatile, aggressive, in top physical condition to be able to handle the deep game and be able to counter many tennis styles and offensive tactics.  The top three players today are Djokovic, Nadal and Murray and all are built to hammer out victories by tracking shots and working the baseline.  Murray seems to be the favorite due to his versatility and offensive mindset, but only time will tell as this years U.S. Open commences.

Always promising to be a memorial event this year’s U.S Open commences on August 26th.  Transportation can be provided by host airline Emirates airlines, the always-reliable LIRR and of course All Star Limousine and All Star Limousine Worldwide.  For tickets and scheduling check out www.usopen.org.

The Atlantic Yards Development Project

The Atlantic Yards Development Project

Forest City Ratner’s new Barclays Center was only the beginning of Bruce C. Ratner’s plans for the 22-acre development of Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards.  The Barclays center itself is no testament to modern architecture but functionally its design is impressive, it also has been said that the aesthetic of the arena with its rust colored grid work of panels overlaying a swooping shell-like exterior is a reflection of the tough and progressive neighborhood that it dwells within.  As with anything else there are those that love it and there are those that hate it, the real question is what will the rest of the project end up looking like.

Several low and moderate-income apartment towers are also in the works as part of the deal Ratner made with the city.  Again these apartment towers are a subject for debate realizing now the extreme cost and risk of the construction of these buildings Forest City Ratner is looking to sell a 50 to 80 percent stake in the developments housing component.  This will not be the first time Ratner and his company have sought financial backing during the course of the Atlantic Yards re-development project, during the construction of the Barclays center Ratner sought financial backing from Russian Billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov.  A total of 14 apartment buildings and an office tower at the corner of Flatbush and Atlantic avenues are the end game for Forest City Ratner’s Atlantic Yards project.  Originally proposed to be completed over a 25-year span a supplemental environmental impact statement is in the works to push that timetable back 15 years or else bid out the project sites to developers who can meet the newly implemented ten year deadline.

As with all things there are advocates on both sides of the fence.  Some say Ratner is looking only to line his pockets and not taking into consideration the people or the area he is building in.  Other’s say that this project is exactly what Brooklyn needs to bring new life into the area, the buildings and development will offer housing and job opportunities to thousands, the arena (which is already a proven success) will attract sports teams (like the NY Islanders) and fans to an area that could use something new.  Only time will tell the tale, we will all just have to wait and see how successful (or not successful) Ratner’s newest projects will be.
