Success
Have you ever met a very successful individual engaged that individual and walked away wondering how on earth said person achieved that level of success? That might sound rude or judgmental but I am sure we have all experienced a situation similar to the one described above. I am not here to try and advocate some required formula or combination of character traits that will guarantee success. Success happens to many people for many different reasons and often times luck and timing have as much to do with achievement as actual skill and ability. One talent that is almost universally possessed by many of the most successful individuals in the world is the ability to recognize talent in others and to be able to surround them selves with those people or that talent.
Lets face it no one knows it all and no one will ever know all, there is a lot to know and if you think that you know even close to all there is to know let me tell you, you are very wrong. Something we all need to be is humble, do not presume to be the leading authority on any particular subject because there is always more to learn, it takes a truly confident and secure person to ask questions, especially ones that may paint a picture of inadequacy. So with the assumption that no one knows everything a very crucial skill lies in identifying individuals who may know more then you about a particular subject, being humble enough to listen and take the advice of these individuals but still maintain the authority and respect that is necessary to any leader or figurehead. It is a gift possessed by very few and almost universally possessed by the very successful.
Many people also fail to accept the fact that luck, timing and the willingness to take a risk all play as important a role as actual ability. Now you nose-to-the-grindstone folks may take offense to the statement above but it is true. Some people just have better timing then others or are just luckier, they happen to be at the right place at the right time. Some of these people we call lucky do possess a knack for identifying the right situation or trusting their instincts when something doesn’t feel right but it is hard to positively identify which is which (mostly because a gut feeling is exactly that, and one could be considered lucky because he chose to listen to his instincts at that particular moment).
So next time you meet the eccentric millionaire or the un-educated oil tycoon don’t be so quick to judge as there are many roads to success. Identifying talent, listening to those around you and trusting your instructs when the time feels right are three great examples but are just a few factors that contribute to many of the worlds most successful achievers.
