Wedding Customs

Have you ever wondered where some of our time honored wedding traditions came from?  Wedding trends have changed quite a bit over the years but there are certain customs that have been around for centuries.  Here are five wedding traditions that have stood the test of time despite their unusual, albeit interesting, origins.

1)    Wedding rings were not always apart of ceremonies, ancient Egyptians actually started the trend of wearing a “ring” on the third finger believing that the vein located in this finger runs directly to one’s heart, however, the “ring” isn’t the sort of ring you would find a bride wearing now a days. The rings back in ancient Egyptian culture were made out of hemp or rush, which is a leafless grass-like plant.

2)    Wedding veils were also an addition to the attire of bridal fashion. The wedding veil was invented to ward off evil spirits from the bride on her wedding day. The veil was also a symbol for purity and chastity.  We have the Romans to thank for this tradition.

3)    Bridal Parties were meant to protect the groom and the bride at all costs, the bridesmaids dressed similar to the bride to act as decoys to any potential threats of jealous parties whether it be a kidnapping, or someone looking to upset an arranged marriage.   It was very common in the Middle Ages when arranged marriages were not only about love but about political alliances.  The term “best man” actually comes from the groom selecting the best friend or family member who was most skilled with a sword or sabre. Nowadays there is a lot less on the line and the duties of the best man and maid of honor have now been narrowed down to assisting the bride and groom with little errands and making sure their wedding day runs smoothly and in a timely manner.

4)    Throwing of Bouquets was not always a fun tradition for the bride to take part in with her bridesmaids. The throwing of the bouquet actually started as a distraction from people ripping and tearing away at the bride’s wedding dress. Taking a piece of the dress was considered a good luck token to find love and marriage in the defacer’s life, so instead it became customary for the bride to throw the bouquet behind her back and over her head for one person to catch it and receive the good luck of finding love.

5)    Boutonnieres were meant as a symbol of a groom showing his love and respect for his bride to be by wearing her colors upon his chest. Back in this time wedding dresses weren’t necessarily white and could consist of many different colors, so the boutonniere showed that the groom was representing his future wife and that he was a taken man.

Your Wedding Day Time Line

Your Wedding Day Time Line

When it comes to planning a wedding you are attempting to squeeze two years of planning into about an 8-hour time frame.  This is about as far from easy as it gets!  Your wedding day time line can end up being one of the most important elements on your big day.  If you have several locations on your agenda that day (as most of us do) it is important to establish a general time line and it is important to make sure the transportation you arrange is reliable and professional.  Below are some tips to keep in mind when establishing the time line for your wedding day.

Make sure you plan ahead but do not plan to the second.  Leave your self some breathing room and a few minutes here and there in anticipation of un-accounted for variables.  If you plan to the minute you are going to spend the entire day looking at your watch and worrying that something is going to be missed or late.

Establish your priorities.  What are the important parts of your big day?  Most of you will say everything but the reality is that you may have to pick and choose a little.  Is the cocktail hour important to you?  Do you really need a receiving line?  How much time do you want to spend at that picture location?  These are all important questions to answer before the big day.

Consult with all of your vendors, especially the limousine company.  Make sure all of your vendors are on the same page and are all aware of you timeline and your anticipated chain of events.  Make sure you are communicating with them and that they are communicating with each other.  Consult with your limousine company or whomever you have that is moving you and your people from location to location.  They are the linchpin of your day, without a reliable and punctual transportation company people will get lost, people will not know where they are supposed to be and when, and things will run late causing you to miss some of those very important moments.

Top 5 Things To Do On Long Island In The Fall

Long Island New York is a beautiful place to live.  In an area with such a diverse geography including farms, beaches, woodlands, lakes and rivers, there is rarely a shortage of things to do no matter the season.  Autumn on Long Island is especially festive as fall heralds the harvest.  Apple orchards, pumpkin picking and haunted houses are prevalent across the island and make awesome activities amidst the changing of the leaves and the colors of fall.

With so many choices all the options can be a bit overwhelming so after extensive research we have compiled a list below of five of the best things to do on long island in the fall.

1)   Go apple or pumpkin picking.  Fall is the time of the harvest and Long Island farms have some of their best crops in Autumn.  With apple orchids and pumpkin patches a plenty there’s a lot to choose from.   Check out Stakey’s Pumpkin Farm in Aquebogue a sprawling 26-acre farm that has every variety of pumpkin and gourde imaginable.

2)   Experience one of the many fall festivals on long island.  You have your Oktoberfest and even Septemberfest that are celebrated at several locations on long island, but then each town has its own harvest celebration.  Check out; Oyster Fest in Oyster Bay or The Long Island Fall Festival at Heckscher Park in Huntington both unique events that should not be missed.

3)   Visit a haunted house or attraction.  Long Island is a great place for ghost hunting.  There are nearly as many “real” haunted locations as there are fabricated ones.  Weather your interested in a truly frightening experience or you are looking for something you and the kids can do Long Island has several options.  Take a ride down Sweet Hollow Road in Huntington or have a drink at Katies in Smithtown both infamously haunted locales.

4)   In addition too the orchards and patches there are some very unique experiences that come around when the leaves begin to change colors.  Check out the display at Old Westbury Gardens.  The Rise of the Jack O’ Lanterns is a month long event presented by dozens of local artists featuring over 5,000 hand carved Jack O’ Lanterns that illuminate the paths through the gorgeous gardens at Old Westbury.

5)   Enjoy the season; the fall foliage on Long Island is like very few places in the world.  When the time is just right the landscape is an explosion of reds, oranges and yellows.  Just a drive down the street can be an experience.  To truly enjoy the fall color that long island has to offer check out The Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Oakdale or The Oyster Bay Cutting Fields.

1)  Bora Bora, French Polynesia: is a fantasy brought to life.  With post card quality beaches and waters, it was recently voted one of the best islands in the world by US News and World Report.

2)  Bali, Indonesia:  Bali is nicknamed the “Isle of the Gods” for good reason.  Gorgeous mountain views and ancient architecture dominate the breathtaking landscape.

3)  Paris, France:  Paris has been the city of romance for decades and still remains one of the most traveled to locations in the world.

4)  Venice, Italy:  Another location that has been in the top spot for honeymooners for decades.  A city like no other paved with canals and traversed via gondolas, there is nothing more romantic then an evening Gondola ride down the Grand Canal.  To visit Venice is a completely unique experience.

5)  Harbor Island, Bahamas:   Last on our list is another stunning tropical island and another locale that’s has remained one of the most desirable vacation spots for decades.  Pink sand beaches and turquoise waters, so beautiful they have inspired songs, ring this timeless paradise.
